Why I am not Doing Gaming NFT's
Making an animated short alongside a video game presents a lot of opportunities to reuse traditional art used in production. Originally, my plans as lead developer / animator was to tokenize these art (backgrounds and Manga pages) and resell them to collectors and fans as NFT backed with traditional art. But since NFT's blew up in 2021, a lot of problems have been highlighted in their use especially in game development and design.
(1) NFT are seen as a money grabbing scam:
This is largely true because most NFT's released now do not provide any utility to the game and are just a means for big corpo to grab more money.
(2) NFT's legitimize art theft: Popular artists like Loish and Kenny have forcefully had their works stolen by greedy NFT shillers. This is unethical and its something the digital art and gaming community have collectively frowned upon. Stealing people's art is not cool and using NFT's to do it just stinks of greed and throws people off using the technology.
(3) NFT's are not usable in gameplay:
While there are tokens that can be programmed to be used in crypto games, if a game isn't built around NFT and block chain as its core mechanic, putting NFT's in it won't improve game play and enhance the user experience
(4) Gaming should be fun: Gaming should be about having fun and currently, there's nothing fun about NFT's and the nft community. It's pure greed in that space and this isn't something I want for my game app
(5) NFT's are harmful for the environment : Until the infrastructure to mine crypto currency becomes carbon neutral, NFT's will contribute negatively to climate change. This isn't something I support and I am contributing my own part by building a solar powered mining rig to mine crypto currency without harming the environment. But this infrastructure is 30% done and won't be ready for the final app release.
Although I support crypto currency and NFT's as a way to support the indie artist, until these problems are fixed, I won't be implementing NFT's in any of my games. When I do decide to implement them, it'll be with carbon neutral mined Crypto-tokens. Climate change is real and we should all do our part to save this planet.
